What to Wear

A VERY common question from my clients when planning their branding session is “WHAT DO I WEAR?”. Let’s face it - the idea of a photoshoot is nerve racking as it is, but then to brainstorm outfits, etc.?!

That’s where I come in. Ahead of each session with MEE, I work very closely with each client to help them feel best prepared. Wardrobe is almost always part of the dialogue. In fact, I can recall a client sending me dressing room photos once while selecting the perfect look - true story!

A few years ago I created the MEE Style Guide as a complimentary reference for branding clients, available upon request. This separate step by step guide contains tips and suggestions together with a list of recommendations for some amazing personal care providers located in my hometown.

Here are five quick wardrobe tips for your next creative branding session with MEE:

  1. There is no need to spend a fortune on clothing - often you can find an amazing outfit right in your very own closet. Use sites such as Google and/or Pinterest for outfit inspiration. Make sure your clothes fit well and be mindful of how your undergarments fit (watch for bulges, straps and lines seen through your clothing). Simple and structured is often better, but feel free to add a pop of colour to add some personality and flair.

  2. Want to see what you might look like in photos in a certain outfit? Take a few selfies, or ask someone to help take some quick cell phone images to decide what works and what doesn't. Look at your outfit choice from each side and from behind - chances are, we will be shooting from all angles.

  3. Avoid wearing intense colours or busy prints unless it is in line with your brand. Similarly, avoid wearing any items with logos or words, unless it is part of your branding.

  4. Beware of over-accessorizing/wearing items that are too "in-style". Not only can they be a distraction, but they may cause your images to become prematurely dated. Keep necklines, hemline length, etc. in mind when selecting outfits. Glasses can be difficult to capture without glares. Depending on your prescription, they may also cause facial distortions. They can, however, make a very cute accessory sitting on a desk or table. Of course if you're more comfortable wearing them, do so! But if you're not married to the idea of actually wearing them - don't leave them at home - use them as a prop!

  5. If you really want to make your images stand out, I recommend working with a professional to assist you with your hair and makeup. I work closely with many personal care service professionals and whether it be hair or makeup, spray tans or manicures, I am happy to provide recommendations.
